Genomics and bioinformatics are rapidly evolving into a multi-billion research enterprise and industry. We are looking for a talented individual to join the Southern Alberta Genome Sciences Centre in Lethbridge and the research team of Dr. Athan Zovoilis. Dr. Zovoilis recently joined University of Lethbridge from Harvard Medical School (US) and holds a Canada Research Chair in RNA Bioinformatics and Genomics (www.genome-intelligence.org).

Dr. Zovoilis is a co-founder and the director of the Southern Alberta Genome Sciences Centre (SAGSC), an interdisciplinary research centre at the University of Lethbridge. SAGSC develops and applies systems-level approaches in bioinformatics, health and agriculture genomics. SAGSC is the leading hub of a network of Albertan Universities, the Alberta BIOinformatics NETwork (BioNet). SAGSC has been the second genome center in Canada to acquire the Nanopore PromethION sequencer and has developed since then a significant level of expertise in direct DNA and RNA sequencing applications.

The Zovoilis Lab, SAGSC and BioNet are hiring a postdoctoral fellow or research associate that will:

  • Contribute to a wide range of bioinformatics research projects on genomics, transcriptomics and epitranscriptomics

  • Assume research leadership role in SAGSC’s Bioinformatics Core Facility and BioNet’s bioinformatics platform.

  • Contribute to the development of innovative bioinformatics approaches and tools for the analysis of Nanopore sequencing data.

  • Work closely with other team members aiming for high-quality research

Your Profile

  • PhD in Bioinformatics (preferred), Computer Science or relevant field. Graduates of life sciences degrees with substantial computational expertise and coding experience in R and/or python are also encouraged to apply.

  • Experience with genomics, transcriptomics data and/or Oxford Nanopore Technologies sequencing data is an asset

  • An interest in state-of-the-art genomic technologies

  • Autonomous, dynamic and curious
